Banners for Lent & Ordinary time
Banners by Breezy Brookshire, February 2019
The inspiration for the banners is the sense of anticipation, quietness, and self-examination associated with Lent. Combined with Missions Month, the glowing windows at dusk convey the expectant waiting as we work and God moves, bringing more and more people into his family.
From afar, these two banners seem to depict a simple neighborhood with houses positioned close together at dusk. The primary color is a soft dark blue with a pink hue near the top to show that the sun has just set, with splashes of yellow as well. Upon a closer look, we can see that each house has a light on at each window, with some even having the front door cracked open.
Each house is carefully rendered with delicate brushstrokes that show the attention to detail of each brick and windowpane. The juxtaposition of the blue night and the bright yellow lighted windows makes the night seem not quite so dark or menacing. The light is reminiscent of when the people in the house are waiting for someone to return and want them to be able to see their way back.
This is very fitting when we consider that this piece was created for the season of Lent, when the church makes time to meditate on the period of waiting for Christ to return because of this broken world we live in. The light on signifies both the season of waiting and the anticipation that exists side by side with the hope of knowing that He will return someday and our waiting is not in vain.
